To Fix That Pain In Your Back, You Might Have To Change The Way You Sit
I have been preaching this to my clients and students for decades. If you want to help your back, you’ve got to learn how to sit. Start by pushing your butt back as far as possible on the chair. Use a pillow or some other support in your lumbar region to encourage the natural lordotic curve. In this article, they talk about pushing your “tail” back in such a way that you could wag it if you wanted. Not sure if that’s exactly what I would say to clients, but the idea is correct. I tell people to have lumbar support everywhere they sit: at a desk, at the dining table, on the couch, in a movie theater, on a plane, everywhere! That’s what I do. After dealing with a massive herniated disc years ago, I am always about encouraging that natural lumbar curve. The next step is to gently pull the sternum up and let the chin rest back towards the neck as the back of the head gently comes up, too. Instant good posture!
